CANE CULT x Studio Vesh

roots & render collection

Grew from a cultural exchange — a collection shaped not by a single voice, but by dialogue. Dutch design principles — minimal, bold, exacting — came into conversation with Sri Lanka’s rich material language: slow-grown teak, hand-woven cane, traditional joinery passed down through generations. Together, we reimagined these forms through a contemporary lens, always careful to preserve the integrity of the process.

Some encounters feel inevitable. We first met in the Netherlands — Joost and Cas were exhibiting their work, and Zully, founder of Cane Cult, happened to be visiting. What could have been a passing introduction quickly turned into something more meaningful. There was a mutual recognition — of shared values, creative instincts, and a deep respect for process. Over long conversations and exchanged sketches, the idea of collaboration didn’t just make sense — it felt essential.Roots & Render This capsule of four sculptural pieces sits at the meeting point of past and present. Each one is a study in contrast — raw and refined, intuitive and architectural. They speak of heritage, but also of possibility. Of what can happen when you step outside your own context, and choose to listen.

"We dove into the rich botanical diversity that Sri Lanka has to offer. Conversations with seasoned experts only deepened our excitement. From exotic, luxurious species to overlooked types often dismissed as little more than weeds. It’s exactly this contrast that makes the materials sing. Take jackwood, for instance—bright, golden, and vibrant, known from the jackfruit that’s a staple in the Sri Lankan kitchen. It stands in bold contrast to the deep, inky blackness of rare Sri Lankan ebony. Together, they create a piece of tension and harmony."

This piece features a meticulously hand-tied dovetail knot, crafted with the same precision and care you would expect in fine joinery. Unlike ordinary knots, the dovetail knot is a rare and complex interlock, woven strand by strand to create a secure, balanced structure that is as durable as it is beautiful. Its symmetry and tension are carefully calibrated by hand, ensuring that no detail is left to chance, a sense of craftsmanship and artistry that machines simply cannot replicate.

The journey of creating a piece of furniture is as important as the final product. From wood selection and joinery techniques to finishing and quality control, every step is a reflection of our commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and sustainability. Our goal is to craft furniture that not only looks beautiful but is built to last, embodying the rich tradition of Sri Lankan woodworking with a modern touch.
